On the river 1
My most recent work is strongly influenced by a desire to combine my love of block printmaking, illustration, ceramics, and sculpture. I am exploring the use of narrative images that are partly obscured by the object itself. Seeing the full image requires the viewer to examine the object from all angles. I am attempting to coalesce two-dimensional imagery in a three-dimensional form by embedding the two-dimensional imagery on the surface of the form in three-dimensional relief. My goal is to accomplish this without changing the form of the object. The form of this work is based on the tradition of the ceramic vessel. I is also a means of conveying a narrative. This tradition predates historical records and has been practiced by many cultures. The imagery in this work is based on a rich narrative of the Tennessee River Valley where I live and work. I want to give the viewer an image that is whimsical and entertaining but also intricate and complex. The rich colors are used to magnify the abundance of texture left by the relief carving and to highlight the narrative imagery.
